Silicon Valley startup Alef Aeronautics has just debuted a $300,000 flying car. In production since 2019, the company plans to release the car as soon as 2025. Called the Model A, Alef explains that the car will have 200 miles of electric driving range and 110 miles of flying range. The mass of the car’s body is made of an open mesh, within which eight propellers are hidden. Thanks to the propellers, the car takes off vertically – you could, in theory, take to the sky from the middle of a traffic jam. However, it’s yet unknown how flying car air travel will be regulated – whether by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Federal Aviation Administration. To pre-order the vehicle, interested folks can put down a $150 deposit today to enter the ‘general queue, and for $1,500, enter the ‘priority queue.’ Deliveries are expected to kick off by 2025.

Today we’re taking a look at an innovative fire starter, an anniversary pocket watch and an Art-Deco inspired knife. This is Today in Gear.

LSA’s Canopy Self-Watering Planter ($150) is a large, handmade planter that keeps plants hydrated in style. Made from recycled glass, the transparent planter allows users to display large, healthy plants from bloom to root. A cork stopper forms a barrier between the top planter portion and the reservoir below. The cork is laced with a thin cord that carries water to your plant’s roots. The reservoir is removable for easy refilling.

Start Fires Faster With This ‘Match’

tindår wick and bellow kit Überleben

The Überleben Tindår Wick houses a thick paraffin-coated wick inside of an aluminum tube. To use, simply ignite the wick (the brand recommends doing so with a ferro rod) and then maneuver the flame toward your fire or stove. Überleben says that the wick can burn for up to an hour – giving you plenty of time to start the blaze. Should you need extra help, simply pull the wick out of the tube to use the device as a makeshift bellows. The Wick and Bellow Kit retails for $14, and fans can stock up on three-wick refill packs for just $12.

The brand describes the folding pocket knife as drawing “inspiration from the Art Deco period.” Boasting a stonewashed, stainless steel handle and drop point blade made with D2 high-carbon tool steel, the Noventa has no visible screws. Instead, a hidden flipper ensures its uninterrupted profile, and every necessary screw has been hidden in the backspacer. Bring home the knife for $80 and see what makes this piece such an eye-catching EDC.
