Craft beer drinkers rejoice – fresh hop season is upon us. The season was first brought to larger fame thanks to Sierra Nevada’s 1196 Harvest Ale. The beer was made using undried fresh hops, unlike the dried hops brewers traditionally rely upon, and kicked off a nation-wide trend of ‘fresh hop beer.’ Today, the term typically refers to any beer made with undried hops. More specifically, a beer made with hop cones harvested within 24 hours and dropped into the boil whole. The resulting beers boast terroir and annual flavors that cannot be found in a dried-hop brew, something brewers call a ‘greener flavor’ – i.e. something boasting herbal and vegetal notes.
