This week, TikTok announced several updates that it hopes will help users filter out violent, harmful or problematic content. In an interview with CNN, TikTok’s Head of Trust and Safety explained this content could include videos about dieting, extreme fitness and sadness. The app will also introduce a new system that allocates a specific ‘maturity score’ to any videos deemed potentially inappropriate or ‘containing mature or complex themes.’ These changes follow a call made two weeks ago by a member of the FCC to Apple and Google, requesting that the companies remove TikTok from their app stores altogether. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr cited national security concerns surrounding TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, which Carr called “beholden to the Chinese Government.” While TikTok’s new update is not linked to these accusations, it’s becoming more and more difficult to ignore how influential the app has become. Today we’re looking at a new pair of Oakleys, a new G-Shock and micro-weighted fitness apparel. This is Today in Gear.
