In “hyper-expensive-how-could-anyone-afford-this” watch news, there’s a new record for Patek Philippe’s Ref .2499 perpetual calendar chronograph pricing. Sold by Sotheby’s Hong Kong as part of a 38-piece Patek Philippe watch collection (held by someone known as “The Nevadian Collector“) the headline-making sale involved a pink gold 2nd Series Ref. 2499 from 1957, auctioning for just over $60M HKD (or about $7.7M USD). This sale beat out the last record for the most expensive Ref. 2499 — a yellow gold Asprey-signed Ref. 2499 — which sold at in 2018 Sotheby’s in Geneva for CHF 3.915M (or just over $4M USD).
