It appears that the tech world’s retail unionization wave has finally reached Apple. According to reports, workers at Apple’s iconic Grand Central Terminal flagship are calling for a $30 per hour minimum wage, among other quality of life changes. “For pay, we seek a minimum $30 for all workers, built up on a matrix based on role, tenure and performance,” according to Fruit Stand Workers United, the group leading the movement. “For benefits, we seek more robust changes, like increased tuition
reimbursement, faster accrued and more vacation time, and better retirement options, including higher match rates for 401(k) and enrollment into pension plans.” As Engadget points out, if 30 percent of the store’s 270 workers (about 80 employees) sign and show interest in forming a union, the workers can file with the National Labor Relations Board to hold an election. Noting recent successes at Amazon (despite corporate meddling and pushback), maybe this movement might also find some legs under the Apple banner as well. Today, we’re looking at the extra long Jeep Wagoneer “L” series, Bang & Olufsen’s new Beoplay EX earbuds and the creation of the most sustainable wetsuit ever. This is Today in Gear.
