If Nike is known for one thing (aside from athletic excellence and sell-out sneakers), it’s innovation across the worlds of tech and apparel. The Swoosh has announced it’s launching a new Technology Center in Atlanta, Georgia, opening in 2023. Why Atlanta? On top of being a key corridor of modern culture and a luxury fashion destination, it’s also a hub for two things that Nike believes will make the new Technology Center successful: plenty of prestigious nearby universities (Georgia Tech, Morehouse College and University of Georgia out in Athens, Georgia to name a few), and a sports team in virtually every major American pro league. The Center’s first initiatives will focus on expanding Nike’s digital supply chain, address cybersecurity concerns and discover ways to integrate AI into the Nike shopping experience. As we go into the weekend, study up on VanMoof’s new e-bikes, a sporty Patek Philippe chronograph and Todd Snyder’s latest collab with L.L. Bean. This is Today in Gear.

Stand-up paddle-boarders, it’s time to ditch the hand pump.

sponsored product outdoor master shark ii sup electric air pump Outdoor Master

Outdoor Master’s Shark II SUP Electric Air Pump packs the power you need to get up and going with whatever you’re taking out on the water. Using state-of-the-art engineering, the Shark II is designed with speed and efficiency in mind. The Shark II is an automatic dual-stage pump: The first stage is for maximum speed at 350L/min, and its second stage is for maximum pressure at 70L/min. Users track the pump’s output in real-time using the integrated digital display. Simply set the desired pressure, and the Shark II fills to that PSI then switches off on its own. Its active cooling system — a feature unique to Outdoor Master’s Shark II — prevents overheating, even on especially hot days or when filling up multiple SUPs in a single go.

Patek Philippe’s new chronograph is decidedly… sporty?

patek philippe watch Patek Philippe

At first glance, Patek Philippe’s new Grand Complications 5470P is pretty low key for a Patek Philippe. With a fabric strap and a subtle metal case (which is, albeit, platinum), the chronograph is a tight take on what is a powerful timekeeper. As our Watch Desk pointed out, there’s 31 patents that make up this watch’s movement, with a chronograph that measures down to 1/10th of a second and is Patek’s first “high-beat,” 5Hz chronograph.

Sandrin’s new Tungsten Carbide blade is rustproof and hard as hell.

Sandrin is known for making blades that incorporate durable tungsten carbide. The newly released Monza model delivers a polyhedral tungsten carbide drop point blade with either a Zirconium or Titanium handle, resulting in a sleek and simple folder. The important thing to know about tungsten carbide blades are that they’re rustproof and incredibly durable; in the case of Sandrin’s Monza, the blade has a Rockwell hardness of 71 — which is well above what you’d encounter on the blade steel of most production and consumer knives.

Todd Snyder and L.L. Bean’s drop the latest edition of their collaboration.

“I was thinking about the warm-weather styles that a guy would wear for a beach hike during the day and then to relax by a campfire at night,” Todd Snyder said of this latest chapter in his collaboration with L.L. Bean. The “Maine-ah” (like any good L.L. Bean collab) takes cues from the American outfitter’s archives and includes punched-up, reimaginings of classic outdoor-ready styles. From a flannel (that, in this writer’s opinion, takes clear inspiration from the iconic L.L. Bean Chamois Shirt) in a variety of bright colors, to a functional climbing short with an integrated belt, this collab is one of our favorites of the year thus far.

VanMoof goes next-gen with the new S5 and A5 models.

vanmoof e bike VanMoof

VanMoof stands apart as one of the more premiere e-bike manufacturers in the game today, blending both style and substance into its bike offering. These new bikes incorporate a LED light ring display (the “Halo Ring Interface”) to deliver battery info, speed, and connectivity at a glance. This is to make the bikes easier and more accommodating for new-to-e-bike users. Other upgrades include the new Gen 5 E-shifter motor and tweaks to the anti-theft tech, including a new auto retract function and in-wheel kick lock.
