The International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) isn’t just a great way to see how your wine or spirit performs in a tasting setting, it’s also a great way to put a brand out into the public — with high scores generally leading to favorable coverage and, more importantly, sales. As noted fans of whiskey, we were shocked when the highest scoring whiskey — Deanston Virgin Oak — could be bought for under (or, at least, around) $35. As noted by the IWSC, Deanston Virgin Oak has a, “splendidly extravagant with a rich flow of milk chocolate, smooth vanilla and sumptuous pears on the palate. The finish is long and weighty with a stunning flow of creamy nuttiness that keeps on going.” With a 99 point score at this year’s event, it sounds like — for that price — it’s certainly worth a try. Spirits aside, a hyper thin Royal Oak watch, the newest Hoka Speedgoat sneaker and a tank-like Igloo cooler make the highlight reel today. This is Today in Gear.
