Way back in the beginning of January 2022, we noted Sony’s intention to move into the electric vehicle space with the reveal of the Vision-S 02 SUV Concept At CES 2022, an announcement building on the earlier reveal of Sony’s Vision-S 01 sedan back in 2020. According to a joint news release, Sony’s found a partner to help bring its EV intentions to life: Honda. While the operation is in its infancy, the pair have formed a “strategic alliance… that outlines their intent to establish a joint venture.” While the pair are clearly very serious about this new partnership, it’s so early on in the proceedings that their new company together is currently just called… well, literally, “New Company” in the announcement. Long story short, the pair will leverage Sony’s background in producing technology and entertainment (including a new “mobility service platform”), alongside Honda’s ability to not just manufacture — but manage and sell — vehicles. With the first vehicle is slated to release from the “New Company” in 2025, this new step forward obviously gives Sony the ability to theoretically build its once-concept-only “Vision” series vehicles. Time will tell if the pair stick to Sony’s original (pun not intended) “Vision” or end up dreaming up a new concept. We’re kicking off the week with news on the return of Stone’s Green Tea IPA, Hydro Flask’s colorful new collection and Luminox’s collaboration with SOPHNET. This is Today in Gear.

Anyone who’s spent any amount of time on the links knows that your golf kit is a lot more than just the selection of irons and woods you pack in your bag. It’s likely why Callaway made its FF Opti-Stretch shorts not just supremely comfortable, but flexible for life on or off the course. The FF Opti-Stretch is made with a performance-first fabric, a blend of interwoven layers of spandex for full range-of-motion and all-day comfort.

Vero Engineering’s Neuron knife is a solid introduction to the brand.

vero engineering neuron brass knife Urban EDC Supply

Vero Engineering might not be one of the bigger names in EDC, but it’s definitely a brand to keep on your radar. Effectively a side project of mechanical engineer-turned-knife designer Joseph Vero. The brand’s first-ever slipjoint design — the Neuron — represents a current trend in the EDC space. The Neuron swaps a classic backspring slipjoint for a double detent system, making it easy to open with a flipper or two-hand nail mark. With a 2.75in sheepsfoot blade in M390 steel and solid brass scales (on a titanium frame), consider this a stylish but functional workhorse.

Hydro Flask’s new collection takes cues from the hues and colors of Hawaii.

hydro flask colors of kona collection Hydro Flask

We love Hydro Flask for its reliable suite of bottles, tumblers and coolers. The brand’s latest collection is inspired by the “colors of Kona.” Taking cues from natural hues found in and around the Hawaiian islands, Hydro Flask worked with pro surfer and scientist Dr. Cliff Kapono to select four distinct colors that appear across a variety of different items. These range from the sunny orange “Starfish” to the rich red “Snapper”; to the breezy “Saltgrass” and the bold blue “Laguna”. See how the new colors appear on these Hydro Flask favorites down below.

Stone’s Fan-Favorite Series revives 2011’s Japanese Green Tea IPA.

baird, ishii, stone japanese green tea ipa Stone Brewing

Originally brewed back in 2011, this beer is a joint project from the minds of Stone alumnus Toshi Ishii and Brian Baird. Using both Japanese green tea along side northern and southern hemisphere hops, this deep gold IPA has notes of tropical fruit and peach with herbaceous notes — all backed up by clear aromas of green tea (obviously).

SOPHNET. and Luminox release reworked edition of the Navy SEALs-inspired 3001 watch.

luminox 3001 soph watch SOPHNET.

Released at the end of last week, SOPHNET. (a largely Japanese-only upscale streetwear and lifestyle brand in operation since 1998) dropped a collaboration timepiece in collaboration with Luminox. Based on the 3001 model, which has the benefit of roots with the Navy SEALs. Serving as the first time, “for Luminox to design a bezel based on a divers’ watch motif,” the watch includes a rugged Carbonox case, 200M/660ft water resistance and the use of the LLT system — which should keep the watch luminous for a quarter century.
