With the conflict between Russia and Ukraine taking over the headlines throughout the weekend, many Americans want to do their part to show their disapproval of Russia’s aggressive tactics and invasion of neighboring Ukraine. For some liquor stores across the country, this has manifested as unofficial boycott of all Russian spirits — especially, vodka. In fact, state officials in Ohio, Utah and New Hampshire have called for shops to remove any and all Russian goods from store shelves, which would include state-run liquor stores. Ironically, while many notable brands like Stoli or Smirnoff have roots to Russia, many of these brands haven’t been produced in Russia for years, owned by beverage conglomerates that — ironically — are in EU member nations that have condemned Russian aggression. Even the one well-stocked vodka label that is still produced in Russia — Russian Standard — is only a single brand in a much larger market. According to CNN, Russian vodka currently accounts for sliver of the $7 billion annual vodka market; said another way, less than 1 percent of vodka consumed here in the United States actually hails from Russia in the first place. While we can respect storeowners and state lawmakers’ desire to stand against Russia, it might be a little bit more complicated than dumping a bottle or two of Smirnoff down the drain. Vodka-based politics aside, we’re taking a look at GiantMouse’s first-ever slipjoint blade, Brooklyn Brewery’s latest permanent addition and Norse Project’s “In Falling Water” gear. This is Today in Gear.

GiantMouse has built a reputation for well-crafted knives, thanks to the work of Danish designers Jesper Voxnaes and Jens Ansø. The newest addition to GiantMouse’s ACE series — a line that balances accessible value and everyday quality — is the ACE Farley blade. Produced by Bestech with Böhler M390 steel, the knife features a 2.75in and an ambidextrous nail mark opening mechanism. With handles offered in either brass or canvas micarta, the Farley doesn’t skimp on aesthetics, even though it should perform reliably as a multi-use EDC.

Brooklyn Brewery dropped a new beer into its permanent rotation, the Pulp Art Hazy Double IPA. Building on the success of the Pulp Art Hazy IPA, the double IPA iteration packs in bolder pineapple and passionfruit notes, courtesy of the Citra, Sultana and Sabro hops. While pairing suggestions vary based on each individual palate, it’s recommended to work well with dishes using tangy feta cheese or smoky-spicy salsa.

Norse Project’s “In Falling Water” collection is built to brave tough spring squalls.

Spring showers may be expected, but that doesn’t make the rush of rainwater and inclement weather any easier to deal with. Norse Projects’ “In Falling Water” collection (a collection-within-a-collection for Spring/Summer 2022) utilizes Gore-Tex on both the Nunk and Fyn shells. Inspired by mountaineering parkas of the 1960s, the jackets have an age-defying minimal aesthetic, but are thoroughly modern in their lightweight, breathable build.
