The Hyperloop One, futuristic transportation infrastructure developed by Virgin Hyperloop, just got downgraded to carrying cargo only. The technology, which has been promised for years, was originally theorized centuries ago: vacuum-sealed tubes reduce air resistance for the train vehicles traveling inside, thereby reducing energy demands and allowing for faster travel.

In the U.S., where rail travel is woefully underdeveloped, the tech has had trouble gaining traction. Despite successful trials with human passengers, Virgin Hyperloop hasn’t made progress in the human travel arena. In a sudden pivot, the company laid off half its staff and is now focusing on trying to solve the now-perpetual headache of global supply chain issues. Several cargo customers have reportedly signed on, including the Saudi Arabian government.

So much for staying in the loop–apparently, we’re never even going to get in one in the first place. In more accessible news, today’s gear includes the GoRuck Trailblazer’s Heritage Collection, big news about Ford’s Ranger Raptor, Spotify’s Car Thing, and much more.

GORUCK’s military roots go deep–its founders have backgrounds in the U.S. Special Forces and CIA. In honor of Black History Month, GORUCK has introduced the Trailblazers Heritage Collection as an homage to Black soldiers and units pivotal to U.S. success in World War II. The collection comprises four colorways of GORUCK’s bestselling 26L GR1 Heritage Rucksack ($395) featuring the brand’s super-strong duck canvas, which is treated with a waxing process that ensures every piece will be enjoyed by generations to come. All net proceeds benefit The Give Team, a fitness and leadership program made up of students from the inner-city neighborhood of Parramore in Orlando.

Another day, another incredibly awesome Ford Raptor…

ford raptor Ford

Ford has been on a kick-ass vehicle tear lately and is continuing the streak with the (almost) fully revealed Ranger Raptor pickup truck, which slots in below the Raptor F-150 and recently announced Bronco Raptor. The Ranger Raptor will get its go from an exclusive twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 producing 288 horsepower and benefitting from Ford’s anti-lag turbo system found on the GT supercar. That’ll all likely route through a 10-speed auto and full-time 4WD, a highly upgraded suspension setup, and a sport-ified interior. The Ranger Raptor is likely to bring U.S. production in Spring, 2023. Firm pricing TBD.

Spotify’s smart device is fully available for any dumb car on the road.

tech roundup Spotify

Spotify’s automotive music-streaming device, oddly named “Car Thing,” is now fully available to Spotify Premium subscribers for $90. It’s a small dash-mountable touchscreen interface with a large scroll knob that connects wirelessly to users’ cell phones and allows hands-free listening and controls. Since it debuted to a limited audience, Spotify has updated the Car Thing to include a night mode color scheme and some additional voice controls. Over two million folks had reserved their Car Thing via a waitlist, but the device is now available for direct purchase.

Giro’s new helmet is perfect for hot heads.

Using a combination of something Giro is calling “spherical technology” and a Mips system, the brand’s new $220 Merit Spherical Helmet promises to “redirect rotational impact energy” in the event of an impact, and separate inner and outer liners are designed to further pad when needed (i.e. hopefully never). The highlight here is a series of “Wind Tunnel” vents that promote airflow around the scalp to exhaust hard-work heat. The helmet features Giro’s Roc Loc Trail Air Fit System and advanced sweat absorption pads that boost comfort even more.

Sony’s new VR2 headset is now undeniably… *real*

sony vr2 headset Sony

Following its announcement a year ago, Sony has fully revealed the VR2 headset, which features a white and black color scheme à la the PlayStation 5 and plenty of refinements over the first-gen device. The VR2 features a lens adjustment dial, lighter weight and a new vent design. The original VR was compatible with the PS5 only when using an adapter; the VR2 connects to your PS5 with a single USB-C cable and boasts “haptic feedback, eye tracking, 4K HDR, 90/120Hz frame rates, foveated rendering, and a field of view of 110 degrees.” No word on price or a release date yet.
