The future of Outdoor Retailer, one of the industry’s biggest trade shows, is in flux. Currently hosted in Colorado, the organizer (parent company Emerald) has shown interest in pivoting the event to Utah when its contract in Colorado expires. The problem is, the state’s government has been attempting to shrink the state’s Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments, something that’s led several big name brands — including Patagonia, Arc’teryx, REI and The North Face — to release a joint public statement saying they’ll skip the Outdoor Retailer show if it moves to the Beehive State. This isn’t even a new issue — the Outdoor Retailer show moved out of Utah and into Colorado for a similar reason back in 2018. Wherever the trade show ends up, it’s a major opportunity not just to be on the cutting edge of new gear, it’s also a financial boon for the hosting city. While you’re probably thinking, “I’m not a brand, why do I care about a trade show,” the importance of this pushback isn’t just to do with this single event, it’s a great example of brands (many of whom we’ve discussed and shared love for here on Gear Patrol) putting their metaphorical foot down to protect the environment and public lands where their products are used every day. We’re diving in on a watch that should make you a better coffee brewer, Arc’teryx Veilance’s Spring/Summer 2022 drop and a rowdy new Canyon bike. This is Today in Gear.

Brew’s built a chronograph that’ll make you a better coffee maker.

As the name implies, Brew is a brand that knows how to appreciate the simple joy of a coffee break. The brand has recently released a new colorway of its Retrograph watch, which takes cues from “Telephone Timers” from the 1930s by featuring, “specific markers that specify when the optimal espresso shot has been extracted.” This iteration makes its inspirations known: Aside from featuring an espresso machine-like case, its color scheme — including rose gold and chocolate brown — look like a shot of freshly pulled espresso.
