Since offering the ability to pay in cryptocurrency in 2020, PayPal has only remained bullish when it comes to the blockchain. Now the company has plans to offer its own stablecoin (effectively, a blockchain-based currency that’s backed up one-to-one with a non-crypto, real-world asset like the U.S. dollar). Uncovered by developer Steve Moser and explored by Bloomberg, PayPal has remained relatively quiet about the discovery, telling the latter that it’s simply exploring the idea of pursuing a stablecoin. It’s not unlike the work done by Facebook parent company Meta, which launched the Novi cryptocurrency wallet and supported the creation of the Pax Dollar (which is another stablecoin backed by the U.S. dollar) at the end of 2021. Whether PayPal pursues these plans is still an open question, but the general likelihood of major retail communities developing and trafficking in their own blockchain-adjacent currencies seems like a highly-plausible future.
