It’s no secret that cryptocurrencies are seen as one of the hottest new investment opportunities (one look at Los Angeles’ Staples Center rebrand as the Crypto.com Arena should tell you all you need to know). In another combination of crypto and basketball, Nets’ star Kevin Durant — and his company Thirty Five Ventures — has signed on to be the face of cryptocurrency trading platform Coinbase. Speaking to Bloomberg, longtime Durant manager and firm co-founder Rich Kleiman, said of the deal, “Kevin does very, very few brand deals and that was by design. They’re this new model of brand partner for us, where they do integrate in all different parts of our business.” With Durant’s first ad for Coinbase set to launch this Thursday, the partnership is just the latest iteration of crypto firms’ push into different realms of pop culture and entertainment, putting the crypto-trading platform at the forefront of consumers minds as we wrap 2021 (and, frankly, enter the NBA’s lucrative Christmas game day slate). Crypto aside, get details on Damasteel-coated headphones from Campfire Audio and Sagamore Spirit’s first-ever bottled-in-bond rye whiskey. This is Today in Gear.

If you’re heading home to a warmer climate — and planning on grilling for Christmas dinner — consider Nomad’s new suite of grill tools. From a French-made, nitrogen-treated chef’s knife (made with Texan brand Made In Cookware) to a BBQ set that’s built with fully-forged, tempered stainless-steel, it’s designed for balance and long-lasting use.

In the spirit (pun not intended) of bolstering and reviving Maryland’s legacy of rye whiskey distilling, Sagamore Spirit has released its first-ever bottled-in-bond rye whiskey. This four-year-old blended release is a milestone for the brand, made entirely at Sagamore Spirit’s Baltimore distillery and designed to represent Maryland’s centuries-old whiskey history as a full bodied (yet more balanced) regional rye style.

Marmot’s Mammoth Parka (often known simply as a “Biggie”), has seen a slight update. The jacket offers key features, including 700-fill down, 100 percent taped seams to keep moisture out, a zip-off down-filled hood, an interior media pocket, microfiber internal cuffs and a drawcord waist for fit. Wrapped up in waterproof two-layer Gore-Tex fabric, it’s the classic Mammoth you know and love (with a few added perks).
