Today in Gear: Start the Week with These Product Updates

With Cyber Monday upon us, take a break from deal-hunting to scope out The James Brand’s new knife and updates on Jack Dorsey’s departure from Twitter.

While we’ll definitely get into the day’s product news without too much delay, it would feel weird (for this writer, at least) to not begin this week by celebrating the life of artist, designer and multi-hyphenate Virgil Abloh. Announced suddenly on Sunday, Abloh passed away after a private, two-year battle with cancer. While many may associate Abloh with streetwear or designer fashion collections, Abloh’s welcoming and inclusive approach to the creative process provided an almost open door into “gatekept” industries once thought to be virtually impenetrable. Love or hate his aesthetic language, there’s no denying the influence Abloh has left not just on the fashion world, but also on global creative culture in the 21st century. He redefined the way we contextualize our influences (anyone with a “moodboard” social media account can thank Abloh), and showed so many how a single vision can transcend one industry to become something that crosses cultures and mediums. While it can seem easy to lionize someone shortly after their death, it is not hyperbole to say: He may have inspired many to follow in his footsteps, but there will never be another man like Virgil Abloh. This is Today in Gear.

Meet the Redstone: The James Brand’s new compact, go-anywhere knife.

the redstone knife The James Brand

We’re big fans of The James Brand here at Gear Patrol, and this new blade is a great reminder of why. The Redstone is a versatile blade that incorporates an “island” design concept, which gives the finger a natural rest point between the base and the blade — something you’ll notice immediately on a knife this compact. While this has tiny touches that make it a lightweight option, the Sandvik 12C27 should hold up to any job (oh, and it comes in some pretty wild color combos).

Jack Dorsey steps away from Twitter, again.

For the second time since founding Twitter in 2006, Jack Dorsey is stepping away as CEO of Twitter. While he’s helmed the company since returning in 2015, it’s safe to say that — under his latter tenure — the company has evolved into a pillar of global information gathering (thanks, for good or ill, to the exploits of one U.S. President). Outlining his succession plan on a tweeted email (naturally), it’ll be interesting to see how Twitter evolves once again without Dorsey at the top.

Oris’s Rectangular models prove it’s hip to be square.

oris rectangular watch Oris

While not necessarily new, Oris’s Rectangular series has reemerged with renewed vigor, focusing specifically on celebrating the model’s Art Deco inspirations. While earlier takes in the Rectangular series have had GMT or Chronograph functionality, this iteration streamlines the watch in a way reminiscent of the Cartier Tank. Coming in four options (with all but the yellow-banded option boasting a face in matching colors), it’s a simple, old-school dress watch that’s, frankly, hard not to like.

Pelican’s new wallet is damn near indestructible.

g5 personal utility rf field wallet Pelican

You’re likely familiar with Pelican’s line of hard-sided cases — especially if you’re someone who works around camera equipment or fragile gear. The brand’s brought that hard-wearing philosophy into a wallet that’s crushproof, waterproof and has an RFID-blocking shell. Constructed out of aircraft-grade aluminum and sealed with a gasketed O-ring, the only thing that’s touching your cards and cash is you.
