Apple’s had a really promising last few months, what with two separate events in September and October announcing updates across everything from the iPhone and iPad lines, to new AirPods and advancements in the MacBook Pro series. All that buzz certainly has us excited, but it’s reports of buzzing or crackling sounds in the brand’s AirPods Pro that have the company back on the backfoot. Fortunately, Apple is attempting to rectify the issue by expanding its repair program coverage for an additional year; while the AirPods Pro were originally covered for just two years after the initial sale, the label is now expanding that to a full three years. Long story short, even if you were one of the very first to pick up AirPods Pro back in 2019 (which, given that they stand as one of our favorite noise-canceling earbuds — we don’t blame you), you still have time to get them fixed. Though if that’s not the only thing in your life that needs a little tuning up, read on below. From a portable EV charger the size of a suitcase, a set of four new flipper knives from Finch, this is Today in Gear.

Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head team up for Black Friday special release.

dogfish Dogfish Head

Dropping November 26, Dogfish Head and Angry Orchard have teamed up for a new twist on a sour ale. Blending a barrel-aged sour with fresh apple juice from Angry Orchard’s estate in Upstate New York, the special-edition release will drop in 375 ml bottles at Dogfish Head’s merch shop and (if you happen to be in the area) at its Milton Tasting Room & Kitchen.

Take your EV charger with you anywhere you go with the ZipCharge Go.

The rise in electric vehicles is nothing short of laudable, but one sticking point remains clear: If you live in (or are driving to) a place with few charging ports, how do you top up your de facto fuel tank? Clocking in at roughly the size of a carry-on suitcase, the ZipCharge Go is a modern (see: portable) solution, packing an array of batteries that provide about 20 to 40 miles of distance on a single, hour-long charge.

Finch rounds out the final months of 2021 with four unique flipper releases.

finch Finch

Since 2019, Finch has made EDC that’s inspired by friends, family and the personal memories of the brand’s co-owners. In the last four months of 2021, the label launched and has plans for four new blades. These range from September’s “contemporary sport knife” Devil’s Finger and October’s short blade Cherry bomb, to the upcoming Harvester — a Sodbuster-inspired 2.85 sheepsfoot blade — and the Drifter — featuring a 2.8-inch California clip point blade.

Change the way you fill your tubeless bike wheels and tires with Reserve’s Fillmore valve.

While many things on a bike have changed over the centuries, it’s curious that — as Reserve, a company founded by engineers from Santa Cruz Bicycles, points out — the tire valve systems haven’t. In the ubiquitous Presta valve system, tubeless tire sealants inevitably clog the valve and block air flow over time. Reserve’s new Fillmore valves address long-term air flow issues and clogging by using a piston-like opening, which also makes adding sealant into the tubeless tires significantly easier to boot.

Arc’teryx’s online-only ReBird recycling and repair program goes IRL in NYC.

Like any good outfitter worth the investment, Arc’teryx is committed to preserving and extending the life of all of its garments, no matter how worn. This is the thrust behind its ReBird program, where shoppers can send in damaged Arc’teryx goods to the Arc One factory, where they are rebuilt and repaired before being returned and worn for years more. Now, shoppers can watch this process happen IRL, with the addition of a ReBird operation at the downtown New York flagship. Learn More about ReBird below.

A Gear Patrol reader asks: I left my (beloved) Gear Patrol x MiiR water bottle on a flight this weekend. Can you recommend a similar style to replace?
The Expert: “Ahh man. That’s one of the biggest bummers of airplane travel. My condolences to you!

MiiR is a great brand because the bottles are typically lightweight, with double-walled vacuum insulation that keeps your beverages the temp you want them — whether that’s hot or cold. The most similar choice to replace the lost-but-not-forgotten bottle would be this MiiR option.

However, if you’re hoping to switch things up and take this opportunity to try a new bottle on for size, I like Corkcicle’s Classic Sport Canteen for its triple-walled insulation, as well as Hydro Flask’s 32-ounce Wide Mouth Bottle. The handle on the Hydro Flask is one of the most comfortable, (and if you take your bottle on hikes or long travel days you want something that’s not going to be a pain to carry around).” – Hayley Helms, Staff Writer, Outdoors and Fitness.
