We expect that a traditional “fashion” brand will pay strict attention to craft and quality when constructing its clothes, but what about a globally recognized sportswear label? Nike’s “Every Stitch Considered” (often shortened to just “ESC”) line puts quality and design ahead of technical sports performance, creating a full-on luxury lifestyle offering that’s literally made in small shops in the Lombardy region of Italy. For this writer, it’s a reminder that great product design can come from anywhere, and help shift the preconceived notions of — or presumptions around — a brand in the process. Speaking of noteworthy design, we’re shining a light on The James Brand’s new cookware collab, Mirror’s first foray into AI-integrated weights and Jack Daniel’s defiant high-proof whiskey. This is Today in Gear.

Pendleton and Lee celebrate a combined 300 years of American craft (including Cone Mills Denim).

lee

Lee and Pendleton haven’t just been creating timeless designs since the 19th century, they’re also icons of Americana. The pair have teamed up a selection of goods that leverage both brands’ legacies. From a pair of jeans using selvedge denim woven at Cone Mill’s White Oak Plant to a chore coat and shirt, each piece uses quality denim with pops of Pendleton’s signature patterned wool patches.

Seiko streamlines (and slightly shrinks) the GPS solar-powered Astron watch.

seiko astron

Seiko’s Astron watch is a first-of-its-kind GPS solar-powered watch, designed to automatically adjust to your current timezone at a touch of a button — all while powered by sunlight alone. The brand has streamlined the case for this high-tech model, bringing it down to 39 mm and swapping the chronograph dials for a simpler three hand edition.

mirror Mirror

Mirror shifted the workout space with its nearly-incognito way to bring personal training into the home. Now, it’s adding its first new product since the launch of its flagship Mirror: a line of smart weights that track performance and can be customized to each users’ needs. Using AI, the weights will check form and reps, effectively acting like a personal trainer to help shape a strength training regimen. The weights land on November 22, but read up on our impressions on Mirror down below.

We’ll just cut to the chase: According to the brand, Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill High Proof clocks in somewhere between 137 and 148 proof. For context, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau’s legal limit is 160 proof in the bottle. It currently stands as Jack Daniel’s highest proof offering from the historic distillery. Read on for more details on Coy Hill High Proof’s release later this month.
