In most parts of the US, grilling season is coming to a close. Sure, there are always those that brave the winter snow to break out the charcoal and savor the flavors that most confine to warmer months, but the vast majority will retire to the kitchen as soon as frost starts to appear on the ground. If you fall into the latter category, why not toast to a great season with an A5 Wagyu steak from…Costco? That’s right, Costco — home of Kirkland Vodka and the oddly well-respected Wavestorm Classic surfboard — is offering an 11-pound Japanese Wagyu NY Strip loin roast for $800. That’s actually a $100 savings off its regular price of $900. How about that? If you’d rather spend your hard-earned coin on something less lavish, we have plenty of other notable products in this edition of Today in Gear.

Wrangler enthusiasts pining for a three-row option may soon have something to celebrate. MOPAR has teased a new three-row Wrangler concept ahead of the SEMA show in Las Vegas on November 2. It’s called the Wrangler Overlook, and while it’s still a concept, it could signal intent from the Detroit outfit in coming years.

Nikon’s Z9 eschews a mirror…and a shutter?

nikon's z9 camera Nikon

On paper, Nikon’s new Z9 is better than the Canon R3 and Sony A1, and cheaper (relatively speaking). It has some jaw-dropping tech like a 45.7MP Stacked CMOS sensor, can shoot 20fps in RAW and, perhaps most notably, ditches a mechanical shutter for a full-time rolling electronic shutter.

3 best vpn services gear patrol private internet access Gear Patrol Studios

A Gear Patrol reader asks: I’m looking for the best VPN or WiFi security app for iPhones I can find. Any you guys can recommend?

The Expert:VPNs are an annoyingly crucial bit of cyber-kit these days, and they’re unfortunately a little touchy to give advice on, for a few reasons. A lot of the choice depends on your technical needs (how many devices, what kinds, how many active connections, how much are you willing to pay) and what your priorities are (spoofing your location to get around geo-locking, hiding traffic from your ISP, hiding traffic from the government).

That said, there is one big pieces of advice I can give: Pay for it.

‘Free VPNs’ exist, but if you aren’t paying for the service, odds are they are harvesting your data and selling it. For some use cases, like if you’re just trying to spoof your location, that might be OK. But it’s better to just pay.

As for specific recommendations, Nord VPN, Mullvad, and TunnelBear are all good bets, depending on your needs, and all have apps for iPhone. It’s worth doing some research on your own, but those are good places to start.Eric Limer, Senior Editor, Tech.
