Today in Gear: July 21, 2017

High-performance running sunglasses, an iconic Porsche rally car, a leather belt worthy of Batman and much more.

Good morning. Elon Musk has apparently earned government approval to build an astonishingly ambitious Hyperloop tunnel connecting New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The high-speed transit technology, which has already begun testing at SpaceX’s headquarters in California, would shuttle passengers and cargo from New York City to Washington, D.C. in just 20 minutes, a trip that normally takes more than three hours by train.

• Here’s yesterday’s gear news in case you missed out.

Today’s Gear

What’s New, Now

Norden Room Spray Collection

TIG-gear-patrol-Norden

Norden’s first-ever line of room sprays come in three natural scents, inspired by three distinct regions in California: Idyllwild, Ojai and Big Sur. Idyllwild smells like “Texas cedarwood mixed with herbal sage, earthy vetiver, and a bright citrus top note,” Ojai smells like “a mix of balsamic frankincense, earthy patchouli, and the resinous citrus scent of burning palo santo, and Big Sur smells like “balsam fir, cedarwood, earth, and moss, combined with the fragrance of wood smoke.”

Western Rise AT Slim Rivet Pants

TIG-gear-patrol-western-rise

The Rivet Pants are an update to previous Western Rise legwear, now in a slimmer profile and confoundingly wonderful: quite comfortable, thanks to a light form factor and a little bit of stretch; super tough, thanks to the nylon canvas material (they feel like they could take a more serious beating than I’m capable of givin’); versatile enough that I’ve worn them on an overnight international flight, through the next day, then paired them with a blazer for dinner. – Nick Caruso, Associate Editor

Topo Designs x Kammok Collaboration Kit

TIG-gear-patrol-Topo-Kammok

Colorado-based Topo Designs, luminaries of the modern outdoor lifestyle, teamed with Austin-based hammock maker Kammok to design a limited-edition two-person hammock. It holds up to 500 pounds, resists tears, weighs just 21 ounces, and packs down to the size of a coconut. And since it’s a full kit, the hammock also comes with two heavy-duty suspension straps.

1978 Porsche 911 ‘G’ Safari

TIG-gear-patrol-Porsche

In 2007, Erik Brandenburg drove a Porsche 911 “G” Safari in the 4,350-mile Transsyberia Rally. That historic rally car now lives again in this replica, souped up with plenty of high-performance upgrades: a 231 horsepower, 3.2-liter engine; improved suspension; shorter-ratio gear box; stainless steel skid plates; 16-inch mud wheels and more.

Killspencer Utility Belt

TIG-gear-patrol-Killspencer

Holy Men’s Fashion Week, Batman! Your utility belt is so… lavish! Is that bull hide leather? And those button-on security cords… How is it possible that only you can unclasp them, and not kleptomaniacal thugs? I sure wish my belt could secure my phone, wallet, notebook and keys. But I can’t have nice things, because my name’s Robin and everyone thinks I’m a joke.

District Vision Yukari Windshield Sunglasses

TIG-gear-patrol-District

The Yukari Windshield is District Vision’s widest frame yet, featuring a 59mm lens designed to boost peripheral vision and protection from the elements, as well as a rounded top for extending your vertical field of view. Choose between a black or smoke gray frame, and four lens colors: G15 (black), Sport Yellow, Black Rose and Water Gray, each of which have their own unique performance benefits.

Candylab Pioneer Wooden Car

TIG-gear-patrol-Candylab

From the Gear Patrol Store: Candylab Toys was born out of a desire to revive the glamorous ’60s American modernist vibe and carve it into awesome contemporary wood toy designs. Made up of artists, designers and parents, Candlylab draws on many influences, especially a deep love of classic American cars and the spirit of mid-century artisan furniture designers. The Pioneer Wooden Car features the iconic surf wagon shape and a magnetic canoe on top. Everything screams adventure, camping and the good ol’ days.
