The self-driving car fiascos keep piling up. You’ve probably heard of about instances of the various mishaps: creating traffic jams, blocking emergency vehicles and even causing serious accidents like hitting a pedestrian. Recently Waymo recalled 444 self-driving cars after two crashes, and a group lit one of its vehicles on fire during a Lunar New Year party in San Francisco.

Today we’re taking a look at a phone wallet, aprés booties and a wall light. This is Today in Gear.

Men's Patagonia Houdini JacketPatagonia

Fresh Trail Run Shells

Patagonia has updated its high-powered trio of trail running shells: the Houdini ($139), the Storm Racer ($299) and the Airshed Pro ($139). The aptly-named Houdini can basically disappear inside even the smallest pack and provides wind and weather resistance as you move across the trails. The Airspeed Pro offers breathable wind protection for high-output runs and the Storm Racer is an ultralight waterproof shell for even the worst conditions. It’s a no brainer to throw one of these jackets in your pack every time you head out.

LINE APRÉS BOOTIES 1.0 PROTO 2024LINE

Post-Ski Booties

Score this limited-edition prototype before it’s long gone. Yes, aprés booties should be comfy, but what if they also had strong style vibes? The new and improved Line Aprés Booties 1.0 ($80) have a slick cinch-pull to tighten the fit and a collapsible heel pocket so you can slip them right on. The graphic is a limited-edition, so get yours today.

Lights for Renters

And for everyone else, too. Maybe you’re like us and have wanted to add a sconce here or there, but you’d rather not hire an electrician to hardwire it (or you’re not allowed to do so) and you’re not a fan of dangling wires. Enter the Poplight ($95), a modern sconce that’s easy to install, USB-C rechargeable and pleasant to look at. The Poplight comes in red, black, green, rose, white and marigold.

A Fresh Avy Pack

The ski season is far from over and Pingora Gear just released this 27-liter avalanche pack for backcountry adventures. The Vivid 27 ($190) has a dedicated avy tools pocket and an EYL luggage zipper from YKK, which is designed for durability and abrasion resistance. But the best part has got to be that the pack comes in an array of bright neon colors.

Popsockets Softgoods PopWallet for MagSafe phonesPopsockets

A Snazzy Phone Wallet

The Popsockets Softgoods PopWallet for MagSafe ($40) comes in a variety of colors and magnetically snaps onto the back of your phone. The wallet holds three cards, like your ID and credit card, so you always have what you need with you. Plus, it’s extra strong so you can trust that it’s secure. The wallet will stick to any smooth plastic hard case, but not a silicone or soft case or a “naked” iPhone.
