EV pickup trucks have been much-hyped, and for good reason. Nevertheless, consumer demand hasn’t kept pace with manufacturer forecasts. So, General Motors, which has jumped headlong into electrifying America’s favorite automobile segment, is tapping the brakes. But it isn’t pulling the plug entirely — reportedly, GM is fast-tracking plug-in hybrid models while it dials back production of existing and future all-electric pickups.

Today we’re taking a look at a new trail runner, pow-slaying “hoverboard” and a sophisticated jacket. This is Today in Gear.

A New Trail Runner

First, we’re loving the look of the new Veloce Kevlar Trail Running Shoe ($220) from Naglev. It’s built with a super-rugged kevlar shell — the same material that’s used to make airplane engines and bulletproof vests — that’s built to stand up to the toughest trail conditions you can find. It’s also engineered with a force-distributing exoskeleton, an Ortholite footbed for comfort and has a recyclable and replaceable natural rubber sole.

Jones Snowboard Hovercraft 2.0 Snowboard x Forrest ShearerJones Snowboard

A Crafty Snowboard

New from Jones is a snowboard made in collaboration with one of its pro team riders, Forrest Shearer. The Hovercraft 2.0 ($600) is a versatile all-terrain board with a medium flex and a tapered shape that can take you from pow slaying open slopes to making tight turns down narrow chutes. This limited-edition board features graphics by artist Geoff McFetridge and is made from an eco-plastic topsheet.

A Dreamy Coat

The Askja ($850) from 66°North feels like wearing a thick, cozy sleeping bag but looks incredibly sophisticated. Is there a better combination? The loose, full-length coat is made of recycled duck down and keeps you covered — literally — in the chillest conditions. It features two front pockets, an inside chest pocket and (our favorite) a super high protective collar that can be tightened to keep the elements out.

A More Affordable Garmin

The new Garmin Forerunner 165 ($250) is part of an affordable GPS running watch series that’s designed to offer athletes the data they need to improve performance. The watch features a bright, easy-to-read AMOLED display and offers personalized training plans, health and fitness metrics, recovery information and smart notifications. Plus, the 165 has up to 11 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 19 hours in GPS mode.

The Steep Tech RMST Collection

New from The North Face is a fresh take on a classic collection. In 1991, TNF athlete Scot Schmidt created the Steep Tech collection, designed for free skiers who wanted to access the toughest terrain. The line was rugged, futuristic and equally suited for the mountains as it was city streets. Now, the brand has reimagined the line with modern materials. We’re fans of the Men’s RMST Steep Tech GORE-TEX Work Jacket ($550), which is made with 100 percent recycled GORE-TEX 2L body fabric and features a relaxed fit and two, full-length asymmetrical zippers.
