A Directory of Brands and Retailers That Have Spoken Out Against Racism [Updating List]

Via public statements, their own websites and/or social media, these brands are taking a stand against racism.

full lead – 1940×1300Gear Patrol

At Gear Patrol, our goal as writers and editors is to help you make informed decisions about the products you buy — and who you buy them from. And today, that mission extends beyond recommendations of notable whiskeys or watches or smartphones.

In light of recent events, including the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, we are committed to using our platform to highlight brands and retailers who have spoken out against systemic racism and align with Gear Patrol’s mission and values.

The list below is a work in progress. If you are part of a brand or retailer that has recently spoken out, let us know through this form.

“To our Black brothers and sisters:

We see you, we love you, and we acknowledge your inherent worth and human dignity. The week’s events have us reeling, but truth be told it pains us each and every time the news reports about yet another state-sanctioned killing by law enforcement, the very people that have been designated to protect and serve. This abuse is unacceptable and unequivocally evil, and yet has been a stain upon our nation since its inception. Violence is the American way, and we uncategorically denounce it as abhorrent.

We’re taking this time to organize and plan for how to best show up for you. But we also want — and need — to hear from you. If there are organizations that you personally have experience with, or efforts to get involved with that you personally back, please share them with us. Let us know how you want to see us, as a brand, uplift Black men and women. And we will work hard — both personally and professionally — to help restore the dignity that you so deserve.”

“If you didn’t know, ALLCAPSTUDIO is a Black owned business. ACS has been growing a lot over the last few months and for the new people who have joined us this might be news to you. This week has been very sad, hard, painful, tiring, upsetting, and etc. We want to continue spreading awareness of this all and continue to help as best we can. We encourage and hope you do the same. I protested. I donated. You should do the same, and while you’re at it, start doing your research on Black history and activism. We need to make change. Real change.”

Alter Eco

“‘If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.’ – Desmond Tutu.

Our hearts are heavy as we join our community mourning the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and the countless black lives lost as a result of racism, white supremacy and systemic oppression. The right to live without discrimination or fear of harassment is a basic human right. Nobody should fear for their life or safety because of the color of their skin.

There’s nothing we can say that will ease the pain or bring back the lives lost. We recognize that at this time words are not enough. We need change. We all have the responsibility to end systemic oppression by fighting for an inclusive society.

Businesses like ours have a responsibility to fight for justice for ALL people. We can start by redoubling our efforts to be inclusive and pursue equity in everything we do. There’s work to be done in our own natural products industry since there’s a great deal of evidence suggesting that our sector does NOT reflect the diversity of the US population.

This week, Alter Eco will donate 20% of our website sales to the @NAACP_ldf. If you’re able, please donate whatever you can as well. In our bio, we’ve linked a list of anti-racist resources that we encourage everyone to read.”

Apple

“The pain provoked by the senseless killing of George Floyd extends far beyond Minneapolis. It is about more than one city in mourning. It’s about the toll racism has and continues to take on the Black community, and the trauma and suffering created by all forms of prejudice, discrimination, and racial violence. We stand with the Black community and all of our Black colleagues. You matter, your lives matter, and you are valued here at Apple.”

“Black lives matter.

They matter because they are children, brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers.

They matter because the injustices they face steal from all of us — white people and people of color alike. They steal our very humanity.

Systemic and institutionalized racism are the defining civil rights and social justice issues of our time. We’ve come to understand that to be silent about the violence and threats to the lives and well-being of Black people is to be complicit in that violence and those threats.”

Bombas Socks

“Black Lives Matter. Bombas stands with our Black employees, partners, and the Black community as a whole. We must all take action for justice against inequality and racism.”

“The injustice we are witnessing is racism, and it needs to be called by its name.

Silence is no longer an option.

We don’t have all the answers, but our resolve is strong.

Today, we speak up and evaluate how to progress.

Next, we step toward the day we all run on equal ground.”

Brooklinen

“This country’s racism pandemic is appalling, and it’s beyond time to put in the work to break its systemic injustice. We have a lot to do, and so much to learn on how to be better. Here’s where we’re starting:

As individuals we have donated, raised our voices, called constituents and signed petitions. We are working on confronting our own biases, and learning how to be true allies for justice.

As a company, we’re working on doing more, finding the right partner(s) to donate to as the needs of this movement change, and real ways to put our company values of equality into a more regular practice.

We’ll provide support to our Black colleagues, doing whatever we can to lift the burdens they carry, and give them a safe space to grieve and deal with the emotional exhaustion of being Black in America.

Sharing anti-racist resources, with the goal of encouraging rhetoric and participation, because we know the work is never done.

And we’re listening. To the leaders of these movements, to those who have fought before us, and the next generation of leaders who are wise beyond their years.

And this won’t be where our commitment ends.”

I am reminded of the powerful words of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall: ‘Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. District Vision

“We know nothing.

We don’t know what racism feels like in our own skin. We were welcomed to this country with open arms ten years ago. We came here to do what we love and we firmly believe that District Vision could not have blossomed anywhere else in the world.

We know nothing.

While we were raised in multicultural and multiethnic settings, and the idea of equality across race and gender seemed to be embedded in our world view since childhood, we have come to realize how little we understand of the complexity of race in this country. We have been dangerously unaware of the degree of systemic racism, the level of pain and hardship it took for black Americans to express themselves freely and creatively in the way we’ve been granted to.

We know nothing.

We are guilty of looking the other way, we have not sufficiently educated ourselves and failed to look into many of the open questions with the kind of compassion and curiosity we strive for. Even though we don’t support violence, the uproar of recent days is a stark reminder that we cannot be ambivalent.

We know nothing.

Ultimately, the skill of mindfulness offers a path to the understanding of interconnectedness, the illusion that we have ever or will ever be separate from one another. But we cannot transform collectively without a deep consideration for the suffering of others, a radical openness to hearing the noise we may not want to hear.

We know nothing. ‘I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.’”

“For change.
We believe we need to start at the very beginning with the first step. Be honest with ourselves and acknowledge that racism is a cruel system in America, a nation built on a foundation of exploitation and slavery. And that culture has not changed very much.

But we DO NOT need to stay this way.

After acknowledgment and true honesty, the next steps any of us can take are within our abilities that can make change. We can do anti-racist work daily.

For example,
— Take personal responsibility for our daily eduction. Get out of your comfort zone by reading a book or watching films about Black histories and other cultures you may not know about.
— Speak up at your workplace to help enact diversity hiring quotas that are ongoing and for positions of power.
— We grew up with high school text books that had false histories within them. Help your (or your kids) high school to buy history books that tell the full truths of Black people in American history.

These may sound like simple or small things to do however it can dangerous to skip the beginning steps and focus solely on the big ideas. There are many other steps we can take as well.

Understanding leads to empathy and action. Small steps add up to bigger strides.

Black Lives Matter. We are fully in support of everyone doing the work, protesting, speaking out, for change.”

Since then, our mission has been to support educational programs that promote greater understanding and respect among people with varying racial and cultural backgrounds. Our hearts are with the families of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and other victims of ?racial injustice, and our mission and resolve to be a part of the solution is as strong as it was in 1992. We believe that education promotes conversations, conversations enable understanding, and understanding builds community.

We stand with our neighbors of all backgrounds and ethnicities as we begin the work to heal and hope again for a better future.”

“The current murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor & Ahmaud Arbery, as well as the false accusation of Christian Cooper by Amy Cooper tell us everything we need to know about racism in this country right now… it’s horrific and blatant – it’s not new or worse than before, it’s just being recorded.

It’s time to wake up – time for enlightenment over denial. These deaths must not be in vain. Please we must NOT let these deaths be in vain.

For my non-black folks – do the work, look deeply at yourself, your history, your role, your thoughts and actions or lack of. Ask the questions, get uncomfortable, face the facts, open your minds & hearts, understand the true meaning of white privilege, call people out, call yourself out, be brave, spread the message, stand up, get involved, be heard.

We are deeply saddened by the pain and unrest across our country. Anti-blackness and racism have no place in our world. We stand in solidarity with our friends and community members in demanding equity.

The outdoor recreation and fly-fishing communities are not immune from what we are seeing. We know not everyone feels invited, included, or sometimes even safe to participate in fly fishing. We also know that we, Orvis, are far from perfect, and that there is a lot of work to do. But we are committed to engaging, and we understand that there are many of us in the established angling community who need to step up and lead. It has to be our responsibility if change is going to happen.

We ask everyone in the outdoor and angling communities to join us in expressing a commitment to combat racism of any kind, a willingness to engage in this conversation, and an obligation to create change and create a more equitable fly-fishing culture, outdoor community and greater world. #blacklivesmatter”

Outdoor Gear Exchange

“Black Lives Matter.

Outdoor Gear Exchange unequivocally condemns the actions of the Minneapolis Police Officers involved in George Floyd’s tragic and unnecessary death. Sadly, this is the latest in a long series of incidents throughout the country, including our own Vermont, that speak of a systemic problem of racism in the US. This is a problem that will not go away because some other topic becomes front and center in the news. This is not a problem that we can legislate away. And this is not a problem that we can turn a blind eye to – a fact made more salient by the extensive and passionate protests, peaceful and otherwise, that have occurred throughout our nation in the past week.

Both Vermont and the Outdoor Industry are notably lacking diversity. This is a fact that for decades has been attributed to circumstance. It is, unfortunately, anything but circumstantial and for that reason it is something we NEED to work on correcting. Regrettably, we at OGE don’t have a solution – though we know it cannot be fixed quickly or easily. We do have the ability to actively engage in this conversation. We can and will use our position in the industry and in the Vermont community to work to create more opportunities for inclusion and support those in the community who may not be able to recreate, socialize, shop, or merely exist with the safety and sense of security afforded to others in our community who differ only in their skin color. We are open to hearing how we, as an organization, can improve in this regard and welcome your feedback.

We ask that you, as a follower and friend of OGE, commit to discussing this issue with your family, friends, and colleagues. That you look for ways to give voice to those whose voices are diminished by divisive and hateful rhetoric wherever it comes from. And that, when you see a wrong being committed, whether it be by intent or by ignorance, that you speak up and give clear support to those who deserve and need it. Thank you to everyone who has made their voice heard already.”

We just made a donation to @aclu_nationwide, @naacp, and @splcenter. Those donations are not some sort of magic fix for deeply ingrained and systematic racism, but they do help put resources into the hands of those who fight day in and day out for racial and social justice. It is a start.”

“Today and every day we stand together with our Black employees, partners, customers and the entire Black Community. We respect and embrace diversity, individuality and freedom.

The horrific racism that is happening across America is deeply at odds with who we are and the quality of life we believe in. We recognize that freedom, equality and liberty — values we uphold and cherish — still remain out of reach for too many people in America, and around the world.

We are committed to playing a meaningful role in helping to create a world where everyone, regardless of their race, has the opportunity to create and live the life they imagine.”

“Friends, please take some time to visit the linktree in our bio. It runs through a handful of ways to help demand justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others outside of just spreading awareness. We stand in solidarity with everyone fighting to abolish the systemic racism built into the society we live in today, and we are continuing to seek out ways to act and support. The system is broken and will not fix itself. The rate at which black Americans are killed by police is more than twice as high as the rate for white Americans. Above is a NON-COMPREHENSIVE list of deaths at the hands of police in the U.S. since Eric Garner’s death in July 2014, and it is staggering. Please sign petitions, donate and educate yourselves, your family, and your friends. We have been — and will continue to be — doing our best to do the same.”

“I am usually pretty reserved and content with keeping our little ship afloat from behind the scenes. That said I am grateful to have a “voice”. I feel it would be obvious and redundant for me to use this platform to say that killing Mr. Floyd or any of the countless other Black people throughout history was wrong. Many of us know that; and know that it needs to stop. It won’t. Not until we all understand how we got to this place, sit with it and acknowledge the real horrors that Black people have endured throughout the history of our young nation can we (both Black and White) heal. Take the time to educate yourself about race in America. I started with: Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome by Dr. Joy Degruy.” – Steven Heard, co-owner

We’re owning that we’ve been part of that problem, and with the utmost humility, we’re acknowledging that we need to work harder at being part of its solution. We aren’t looking for plaudits, and we’re not here to signal our outrage. As human beings, like yourselves, we’re deeply hurt and saddened, and we’re declaring our commitment to learning and progressing this sport and culture forward to where it deserves to be. “While we do not have all the answers, and nothing we say here can bring back the lives of those lost, we naturally want to address the crises facing our country right now and figure out our part in moving forward as one. As an environmentally-focused business, we understand that our world and humanity are complex and interconnected. What good are wild spaces, whether in cities or the natural environment, if we’re not all safe within them? From Michael Brown, to Trayvon Martin, to Breonna Taylor, and countless others, PR statements and Instagram posts are clearly not enough. So, we have been thinking all weekend about what we can do to stand up to this injustice. In addition to listening to our community and sharing this message, we have made a corporate contribution to materially support the Black-led NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (@naacp_ldf). We hope you will consider supporting them too (if you haven’t already) in honor of George Floyd—who died one week ago today. #ShareBlackStories”

Then do the actions necessary to leave a lasting positive impact on your community. Make a difference. Your Black teammate is begging you. #blacklivesmatter”

Tracksmith will be supporting the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

“You can search for the right words but you will never find them. Our Black Community is hurting. Our country is hurting. Our people are growing further apart. We need to stand for what’s right. We need leadership. We need activism. More action. Less injustice. More resources.

It is very unclear on how to solve this problem, but what’s clear is that it has been swept under the rug for generations. We hope and pray that the legacy of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and millions of others results in true policy that holds each and every person in power accountable for each and every one of their actions. The guiding principles on how to treat a human being should be black and white, not black vs white.

Since inception, we’ve taken inspiration from streetwear and urban culture. Our founders are minorities and our customers come from all over. Our backgrounds are what make us unique. We are making a $10,000 donation to the NAACP in the fight against racial discrimination and police brutality. #BlackLivesMatter”

Uber

“As a company, we believe that everyone has the right to move freely, no matter where they live or the color of their skin. We’re proud of how Uber has helped improve transportation equity over the last decade. But the reality remains that Black Americans often don’t feel safe to move freely in many places around our country. And they still face enormous barriers that others do not.

This is a reality we should not perpetuate or accept. We must do better.

We know there is no easy solution to the problems we have faced for centuries. We also know that we need to devote our time, energy and resources toward making a difference. That’s why we’re making a number of commitments that we will uphold not just this week, but for years to come.” — Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi

In addition to this statement, emailed to all Uber users, the company made a $1 million donation to the Equal Justice Initiative and Center for Policing Equity, pledged to use Uber Eats to promote Black-owned restaurants by making it easier to order from them with no delivery fees for the remainder of the year. Last year it tied the pay of its senior executives to measurable progress on diversity goals and set a plan to publish data on its workforce for the purpose of accountability.

It’s nice to know people are out there who love and support us. Please know we love y’all too. We will be ok. But what I want people to remember is that the Genesis of this whole thing is that police are killing black people!!! Please don’t let the looting side show that’s going on distract your attention from the main stage, the main conversation we need to keep at the forefront. That is… the systemic racism that is eating this country alive. When ever your mind starts to wander to the looters, keep your eye’s on the prize that Black Lives Matter. I don’t want to talk about looting, or counterfeit bills or someone selling loosey’s on the sidewalk. I only want to talk about ending racism and ending police brutality. Much like the looters are taking advantage of the protesters to enact their agenda. I want to take advantage of the looters, who are getting all the attention now, to redirect the conversation back to ending racism. Let’s not lose sight of the real issue here.
