We’ve recently named the Mazda MX-5 Miata as our Editor’s Pick for Best Affordable Sports Car on Just Get This.
The latest iteration of the MX-5 Miata looks sharper and edgier than previous models, partially in response to past versions being deemed too “tiny” and “cute” by some people. The famous lightweight construction, the razor-sharp steering and the planted handling are all still there, however.
The Miata uses a 2.0-liter inline-four engine that makes 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. For the 2019 model year, the engine’s redline has been raised from 6,800 rpm to 7,500 by lightening the crankshaft, flywheel and other guts of the engine. A new RF version with a retractable hardtop was added to the lineup in the 2017 model year, adding extra versatility to the lineup.
With the fourth-generation ND model currently on sale, Mazda set out to make an MX-5 that was as user-friendly and rewarding as ever, and they pulled it off — and even gave the car a little extra leg room.
