Welcome to Talking Points, a series that looks at what makes certain products worth talking about, brought to you by Gear Patrol Studios.

For years, designers have tried to craft the perfect dive watch inspired by, and created for, the ocean. Yet DOXA decided to go another route.

Instead of warping its watches to complement a muted blue, the team centered its new SUB 300T around the explorer. Inspired by (and named for) the famed maritime explorer Clive Cussler, the new watch pushes fans to imagine a more exciting life; one fueled by sunken treasure and endless adventure.

Read on to learn how the new watch tapped the mysteries that lie beneath the deep and discover what makes this gorgeous timepiece tick.

The Backstory

DOXA x Clive Cussler: A Dream for Ocean Lovers

For those unfamiliar, Clive Cussler is best known for his work as an adventure novelist. His thrillers are set on ocean liners and deep under water, and imagine a world where Atlantis could be real.

But of course, as with any great piece of fiction, every story required some deep, dark research.

Cue Cussler’s decades of maritime experience, and eventual role as the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency. Celebrated for discovering more than 60 shipwreck sites, Cussler is the perfect inspiration for this timepiece.

The Gist

What Makes This New DOXA SUB 300T Dive-Ready?

When creating the SUB 300T Clive Cussler edition, the DOXA team aimed to imbue the series with a thoughtfully historical look. Designed through an artistic lens akin to Cussler’s dozens of novels, the new watch features a handmade dial that evokes the look of a vintage compass.

Meanwhile, an aged steel aesthetic was used across the watch, bracelet, clasp and pin buckle to lend the timepiece a tried-and-true look; fit for a character in one of Cussler’s novels. A 42mm case is topped with flat sapphire crystal, and a unidirectional rotating bezel allows the user to monitor their dive times.

Each piece is individually engraved with its own exclusive number on the side of the bezel. Across the dial, the numbers 7, 15 and 31 are displayed in red, to commemorate Cussler’s birthday.

Powered by a Swiss mechanical movement, and equipped for 30 ATM (300 meters) of water resistance, this dive watch should be by your side for every discovery to come.

Our POV

DOXA: Forever Cemented in Cussler’s Work

While this new collaboration celebrates Cussler’s legacy, the piece has been a long time in the making. Before passing, Cussler wove DOXA’s iconic orange dial onto the wrist of his most famous protagonist: Dirk Pitt. The bright orange accent helped Pitt explore countless ocean caves and sunken shipwrecks, while winning the hearts of horologists on land.

Now, fans have the chance to bring home a piece of Cussler’s fictional world by purchasing the SUB 300T Clive Cussler. Moreover, to continue Cussler’s work, a portion of sales from the series will be donated to the National Underwater and Marine Agency, to ensure today’s maritime explorers can continue to explore everything the ocean has to offer.
