Welcome to Talking Points, a series that looks at what makes certain products worth talking about, brought to you by Gear Patrol Studios.

While the journey to build your own campervan can feel like a rite of passage, it’s safe to say it’s not for everyone. Nevertheless, there’s something about camping with all the conveniences of home, and settling into a comfortable homebase-on-wheels, that makes vanlife so appealing.

So for those who want to test-drive ‘life on the road’ before fully making the switch, or lack the driveway space for a permanent van — listen up.

The Backstory

Travellers Autobarn: Simple, Streamlined Campervan Rentals

Founded in Sydney, Australia, by a team of ex-backpackers, Travellers Autobarn has been perfecting the camper van rental experience for three decades. In 2019, the company brought its iconic rentals stateside, operating out of locations in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco; with additional drop off points in New Zealand, Tokyo and more.

Travellers Autobarn has streamlined its approach to make it even easier for new (and experienced) campers, hikers and gearheads to find the wheels they need. The result? A sleek suite of campervans that make it easy to plan your adventure and accommodate your entire crew.

The Gist

How Can I Rent a Camper Van With Travellers Autobarn?

Travellers Autobarn offers rentals with no young driver fee, so as long as you’re 21 or over you’re good to go. To pick up the van you’ll need to stop by one of the company’s five U.S. locations, where you can count on all day pick-ups and returns.

There are four main campervan styles to choose from. These include a standard Dodge Grand Caravan (i.e. minivan) as well as three tricked-out camper vans called the Hi-Top, Kuga and new Hi5. The Hi-Top and Kuga can both sleep two to three people, and offer functional cooking and storage areas. The Hi5 is can sleep up to five people and comes with solar panels, two fridges, a gas stove, microwave, sink and plenty of room to move around inside.

Each rental comes with free unlimited miles plus 24/7 roadside assistance, and discounted access to a ton of campsites thanks to the company’s partnerships with brands like KOA and The Dyrt.
