Triangle is a French hi-fi manufacturer with a history dating back to the 1980s. For years, its line of Borea loudspeakers has been known for its standout design and exceptional audio quality while also being excellent value.

To date, Triangle has offered two bookshelf speakers in its entry-level Borea line, the Borea BR02 ($389) and Borea BR03 ($459). But now it’s added a third option to the mix, which promises an even bigger sound while still being relatively affordable.

Borrowed design, tech

Triangle’s Borea BR04 is essentially a bigger and better version of the brand’s existing Borea BR03. The two passive bookshelf speakers have a two-way design with the same 1-inch silk dome tweeter and 6-inch cellulose mid-woofer.

But there is a definite size difference. The two speakers are similar in width and depth, but each Borea BR04 stands almost two inches taller and weighs nearly five pounds more than their Borea BR03 counterpart.

According to Triangle, the BR04 was crafted to enhance the BR03, “offering superior performance while maintaining a compact, affordable design.”

The Triangle Borea BR04 delivers superior sound with deeper bass thanks to its larger cabinet size and reengineered front bass-reflex port.

Bigger cabinet, deeper bass

The main audio difference between the two speakers is with bass. This comes down to the increased cabinet size and a reengineered bass-reflex port.

The front-mounted bass-reflex port is something of a staple for Triangle. It gives the listener more flexibility to place its speakers closer to walls without impacting sound.

However, unlike the Borea BR03, which has two front-mounted bass-reflex ports, the Borea BR04 has one large one. According to the brand, this larger port is designed to optimize airflow and deliver deeper, more controlled bass.

6 different finishes

Triangle has upped its offerings regarding the number of finishes, too. While the Borea BR03 comes in four different finishes, the Borea BR04 comes in six.

The Borea BR04 is available in light oak, white, black ash, chestnut, blue and green (the latter two are most different from the BRO3). Each pair comes with grilles that magnetically attach.

Price and availability

The superior sound quality comes at $100 surcharge. While a pair of Borea BR03 cost $459, a pair of Borea BR04 cost $559.

The bookshelf speakers are available now from either Triangle’s website or Amazon, although the latter doesn’t appear to offer all six finishes.
