Technics has a storied history dating back to the 1960s. The revered Japanese hi-fi maker is still best known for its direct-drive turntables — chief among them, the legendary Technics SL1200 — and other premium hi-fi separates.

However, in recent years, the Panasonic-owned audio brand has expanded into consumer electronics, such as wireless headphones and earbuds.

And at CES 2025, it’s celebrating its 60th anniversary by announcing a new pair of flagship noise-canceling wireless earbuds: the Technics EAH-AZ100.

Meet the new flagships

The Technics EAH-AZ100 are new-and-improved versions of the company’s previous flagship noise-canceling wireless earbuds, the 2023-released EAH-AZ80.

The new earbuds have been redesigned to be smaller and lighter for improved comfort. And, according to brand, the promise all-around improvements in terms of active noise-cancellation and transparency modes, voice call performance, and battery life (which is now up to 10 hours per earbud).

But the most significant upgrade with these new buds is their sound quality, mostly thanks to new driver technology.

Fluid magnetic drivers

The EAH-AZ100 are the first wireless earbuds with Technics’ proprietary fluid magnetic drivers, which the company first integrated into its $1,200 EAH-TZ700 wired in-ear monitors.

Yes, you read “fluid” correctly. According to the brand, an “oil-type liquid filled with magnetic particles” is injected into the space between the driver magnet and voice coil, which enables low-distortion playback. Technics says the driver tech helps the EAH-AZ100 deliver “the most authentic, balanced audio that’s true to the original source.”

Also on the audio side, the EAH-AZ100 earbuds support Dolby Atmos and spatial audio with dynamic head tracking. They can play LDAC audio files if you have a device that supports them (which iPhones do not, unfortunately). And they support Auracast.
