Sony’s New Bookshelf Speakers Are Refreshingly Affordable

The brand’s entry-level loudspeakers are primed for stereo or home theater setups.

Sony’s CS Series is its entry-level line of loudspeakers, designed for stereo setups or home theater systems. They promise high-fidelity sound, without the normally extortionate price tag.

This week, Sony has added four next-gen models to its CS Series, including a new center channel speaker, Dolby Atmos modules, floorstanding speakers and new bookshelf speakers.

All are less than $300.

Sony SS-CS5M2 Bookshelf Speakers — The Sony SS-CS5M2 is the company’s new entry-level pair of bookshelf speakers.

3-way bookshelf speakers

The Sony SS-CS5M2 is the standout of the new additions to Sony’s CS Series. They are entry-level bookshelf speakers with a three-way design with three drivers: a soft-dome tweeter, a wide-dispersion super tweeter and a 5.12-inch woofer.

The speakers are Hi-Res Audio certified and have a frequency response of 53Hz to 50,000Hz. Sony claims that the speakers are ideal for music lovers residing in smaller living spaces.

Stereo or home theater ready

The Sony SS-CS5M2 can be used in a traditional stereo setup, but it’s designed to pair perfectly with Sony’s AV receivers and be used in a larger surround sound setup with Sony’s other CS Series loudspeakers. (Below, you can see them being used as rear-channel speakers.)

For those who want to upgrade the Sony SS-CS5M2 with a more immersive sound, you can add the company’s new Dolby Atmos modules, SS-CSEM2 ($250/pair), which fit perfectly on top of them.

Price and availability

All Sony’s upgraded CS Series loudspeakers are available for pre-order now, with shipping expected to begin by the end of this month. You can order them on Amazon or Sony’s website.

The Sony SS-CS5M2 bookshelf speakers cost $250/pair, while the Sony SS-CS3M2 floorstanding speakers, which add an extra woofer, cost $280/pair.

For those looking to build out a home theater system, the Sony SS-CS8M2 center channel costs $230 and the Sony SS-CSEM2 Dolby Atmos modules cost $250/pair.
