Some of the most affordable and unique Sonos speakers you can buy are getting phased out.

According to The Verge‘s Chris Welch, Sonos and Ikea’s partnership has reached its conclusion. This means that the two will no longer release new Symfonisk speakers, but, more importantly, all existing ones will be phased out.

End of an era

Sonos first teamed up with Ikea back in 2019, introducing two “Symfonisk” speakers … these were speakers that worked like Sonos speakers, but were disguised as furniture so they blended into your home. Also, they were exclusively sold by the Scandinavian furniture giant.

The first of these collaboration speakers were the $99 Symfonisk Bookshelf Speaker and the $179 Symfonisk Table Lamp Speaker. They were cool because they were the most affordable Sonos speakers you could buy—each had the same guts and worked exactly the same as the Play:1.

Over the years, Sonos and Ikea have added several new speakers to their shared Symfonisk line, including second-generation versions of the Bookshelf Speaker and Table Lamp Speaker.

In 2021, they released the Symfonisk Picture Frame WiFi Speaker, which hangs on your wall and looks like a piece of art. Then, in 2022, they released the Symfonisk Floor Lamp Speaker, a Sonos speaker disguised as a floor lamp.

Many of the Symfonisk speakers were very popular, especially the Bookshelf Speaker and the more recent Picture Frame Wi-Fi Speaker, because you could configure two of them as rear-channel speakers in a Sonos home theater system.

Support will continue

For those who have Symfonisk speakers … fear not: A Sonos spokesman told The Verge that they’ll continue supporting existing Symfonisk speakers “for many years to come.”

According to the article, Ikea will continue to sell these Symfonisk speakers will supplies last. So if you’re thinking about buying one (or more), you probably should act quickly.

It’s worth noting that, while the current Symfonisk offerings are still more affordable than most comparable Sonos speakers, they are more expensive than they once were.

For starters, the most affordable (and popular) Symfonisk speaker, the Symfonisk Bookshelf Speaker (Gen 2), currently sells for $120, which is $20 more than the original that was released in 2019.
