McIntosh’s MTI100 isn’t your average turntable — it’s better, more beautiful, more versatile and definitely more expensive.

Released in early 2019, the MTI100 is unique because it’s integrated with a lot of additional components — including a 50-watt Class D amplifier, a vacuum tube preamp, a phono preamplifier, and a Bluetooth receiver — so that it’s plug-and-play ready.

That’s right, just hook it up to a high-quality pair of passive loudspeakers and you’re ready to rock.

Now, the renowned New York-based hi-fi manufacturer has unveiled a special-edition version of its exquisite integrated turntable. It’s the first time in years that the brand has given it a new look.

A special edition model

Specifically, McIntosh has teamed up with Sun Records — the iconic record label that launched some of the most iconic names in rock and roll, such as Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash — to release a special edition version of the turntable.

The MTI100 Integrated Turntable (Sun Records Limited Edition) features a custom-printed glass plinth with Sun Records’ branding. It comes with a custom felt slipmat with Sun Records markings on it, too.

Aside from the new look, McIntosh’s special-edition MTI100 promises the same playback capabilities as before.

It’s a belt-drive integrated turntable that’s capable of playing both 33-1/3 and 45 rpm vinyl records. It comes with a Sumiko Olympia Moving Magnet cartridge.

McIntosh recommends pairing it with the brand’s XR50 bookshelf ($2,000) or XR100 floorstanding ($5,500) speakers, but it can drive a wide variety of audiophile-grade loudspeakers.

Additionally, McIntosh and Sun Records are releasing an exclusive Johnny Cash record that has been “carefully remastered from the original analog tapes.”

An exclusive record, too

In addition to the turntable, McIntosh and Sun Records are releasing an exclusive remastered record to honor Johnny Cash.

According to the press release, McIntosh SESSIONS Volume 2: Pure Johnny Cash is an 18-track double album that “revives the energy and emotional depth of Cash’s early years through meticulously restored and rarely heard recordings.”

The record is pressed on 180-gram audiophile-grade 12-inch vinyl that can be played at 45 RPMs. It costs $150 and, unfortunately, needs to be purchased separately.

Price and availability

The McIntosh MTI100 (Sun Records Limited Edition) integrated turntable is available now, but exclusively in the US. It costs $8,500, which is $500 more than the non-special edition MTI100.

McIntosh hasn’t specified exactly how many of these special-edition turntables will be produced, but it’s not expected to be many.
