Korg, the revered Japanese audio brand with a history dating back to the 1960s, is best known for synthesizers, keyboards and music workstations. As of this year, however, it’s diving head first into a new product category: portable record players.

That’s right. The company is getting into the admittedly niche category that lets you listen to vinyl records on the go. But unlike Audio-Technica’s revived Sound Burger, Korg’s portable record players are targeted at DJs, musicians and serious audiophiles.

There are three different models in Korg’s “Handytraxx” lineup of portable record players. And despite each being targeted at a different “type” of vinyl lover, they do share a lot in common.

Each of Korg’s Handytraxx portable record players take their design ques from Vestax’s original Handy Trax from the early 2000s — in fact, Korg worked with Vestax’s founder, Toshihide Nakama, to bring them to live.

Additionally, each is a standalone all-in-one record player — the necessary separates and speakers are all built into the box — but they can be hooked up to a larger hi-fi system. As for power, each can run on six AA batteries or be plugged into the wall.

Below, we brake down the different models.

Korg Handytraxx Play

The Handytraxx Play is the most entry-level of Korg’s portable record players. And it’s specifically designed for DJs.

According to the brand, it features “cutting-edge digital effects, a built-in looper, and high-quality controls that make it possible to physically play with records on the go.” And its control panel can be flipped around, thus accommodating both left- and right-handed DJs.

At the time of writing, the Handytraxx Play doesn’t have a release date. It will cost $399.

Korg Handytraxx Tube

The Handytraxx Tube is the next step up. It’s nearly twice as expensive as the “Play,” but has simpler controls and targets audiophiles and vinyl enthusiasts rather than DJs.

The Tube gets its name from its built-in phono amplifier that features the company’s Nutube vacuum tube technology and thus promises to deliver a warm sound similar to that of a vacuum tube amplifier. Additionally, the record player features an aluminum die-cast platter and a balanced tonearm with an MM cartridge.

Korg will also release an upgraded and limited edition version of the Handytraxx Tube, called the Handytraxx Tube J, which is largely the same but features a higher-end photo cartridge (Jico’s Clipper MM) and promises an “elevated hi-fi experience.”

Korg’s Handytraxx Tube and Handytraxx Tube J portable record players will cost $799 and $1,199, respectively. Neither has a release date at this time.

Korg Handytraxx 1bit

The Korg Handytraxx 1bit is the company’s flagship portable record player. It features much of the same hardware (as well as the company’s Nutube vacuum tube technology) as the Handytraxx Tube, but has upgraded circuitry and advanced recording capabilities. Basically, it’s designed for audiophiles who want to digitize the records at a super high quality.

Specifically, the “1bit” comes with Korg’s high-resolution audio and music conversion software — called AudioGate 4 — which allows it to record 5.6 MHz and 2.8 MHz DSD, as well as PCM formats up to 24-bit/192 kHz. And naturally, the record player plugs into your computer via USB-C.

The Korg Handytraxx 1bit will cost just shy of a grand.
