The new look feels more faithful to the American audio maker’s old-school roots.

Last year, Klipsch announced its Flexus Series, a range of home theater speakers consisting of two wireless soundbars, a wireless subwoofer, and wireless surround sound speakers. In this space, they can be considered rivals to Sonos or Bose.

The most interesting thing about the Flexus Series is that every product is a collaboration between Klipsch and Onkyo — the same parent company now owns the two storied hi-fi brands. So, the range combines American loudspeaker tech with Japanese amplification tech to deliver a pretty killer sound system.

To date, there have been two Dolby Atmos soundbars in the Flexus Series, the Flexus Core 200 and Flexus Core 100. A third soundbar, the Flexus Core 300, the biggest and most expensive in the range, is “coming this winter.”

The brand’s smallest and most affordable Dolby Atmos soundbar is the Flexus Core 100. And while previously only available in black, Klipsch just introduced a new colorway that gives it an old-school makeover.

A mid-century modern upgrade

Since its release last spring, the Klipsch Flexus Core 100 soundbar has only been available in black. However, this week, the company released an updated model with a walnut-and-gray finish.

The design is more mid-century modern. As somebody who is fond of Klipsch’s Heritage line of loudspeakers, the wooden accents give the soundbar more of the vintage vibe that I associate with the American audio maker’s more-than-77-year history.

Klipsch has released a similar walnut-and-grey version of the Flexus Core 200, its larger Dolby Atmos soundbar, too.

Dolby Atmos … what’s the catch?

The Klipsch Flexus Core 100 is a relatively small 2.1-channel soundbar. It’s probably best paired with TVs that are 55 inches or smaller.

The soundbar supports Dolby Atmos, but there’s a pretty big catch. Like other affordable Dolby Atmos soundbars, it lacks the dedicated upward-firing drivers necessary for delivering a truly immersive Dolby Atmos experience. (For those wondering, the larger Klipsch Flexus Core 200 is a 3.1.2 soundbar and does have upward-firing drivers to create a more immersive effect.)

Additionally, the Klipsch Flexus Core 100 supports Bluetooth streaming. It supports Wi-Fi but not Wi-Fi streaming, so there is no AirPlay or Google Cast. However, it can use Wi-Fi to connect with Klipsch’s wireless sub and satellite speakers, allowing you to build a true wireless surround sound system around the soundbar.

Price and availability

The Klipsch Flexus Core 100 in the new walnut finish is available for order now. It’s priced at $350, same as the black version, but it’s actually 20 percent off right now — so you can save $70.

The walnut version of the Flexus Core 100 is being sold exclusively from Klipsch and Target. Only retailers like Best Buy and Amazon only have the black version.
