Welcome to Product Support, a column devoted to helping you get the most out of the gadgets and software you already use.

Apple frequently rolls out software updates to its AirPods so that they improve over time. Most of the time, these updates fix minor bugs, but others can be more significant, improving charging and battery life, as well as sound and call quality.

Recent software updates have delivered some really cool features. In the past, Apple added features like Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Personalized Volume to its AirPods Pro. Last fall, it also turned its Pros into clinical-grade hearing aids.

The problem is that, for years, Apple didn’t explicitly tell people how to update their AirPods. It’s not as straightforward as going to your iPhone’s Settings and selecting “Update Software.” Instead, you basically had to open the charging case and hope they’d update on their own over time. Instructions were very vague.

The good news is that’s finally changed. As of January 2025, Apple has finally updated its Support page to give explicit instructions on how to update each of its AirPods.

How to update: AirPods or AirPods Pro

The following instructions work with all past and present AirPods expect for the AirPods Max, Apple’s only over-ear wireless headphones.

  1. Make sure your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is connected to Wi-Fi. Your AirPods also need to be in Bluetooth range of that device.
  2. Put your AirPods in their charging case and close the lid.
  3. Plug the charging cable into your AirPods’ case, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.
  4. Keep the case’s lid closed and wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
  5. Open the lid of the charging case to reconnect your AirPods to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

From here, your AirPods or AirPods Pro should be up to date. You can check their firmware via Settings > Bluetooth > and selecting the Info button next to your AirPods or AirPods.

To find out what the latest firmware should be, you can just check Apple’s support page. Note: the firmware will differ depending on which AirPods or AirPods Pro you have.

How to update: AirPods Max

The following instructions work with the AirPods Max, both Lightning and USB-C charging models.

  1. Make sure your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is connected to Wi-Fi. Your AirPods Max also need to be in Bluetooth range of that device.
  2. Plug the charging cable into your AirPods Max’s charging port, then plug the other end into a USB charger or port.

From here, your AirPods Max should be running the latest firmware. Like other AirPods, you can check the firmware via Settings > Bluetooth > and selecting the Info button next to your AirPods Max.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a button to manually update AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max; you have to follow the above steps and wait.
