Focal is a French luxury hi-fi manufacturer known for making some of the biggest, best-sounding and most expensive loudspeakers you’re likely to find on this planet.

Last year, it released the Diva Utopia, the brand’s first-ever wireless active speaker system. It combined high-end floorstanding loudspeakers with built-in amplification and a multitude of wired and wireless connections. And it was priced at $40,000.

Fast forward almost a year, and Focal has now officially announced the Diva Mezza Utopia — a bigger, better-sounding and more expensive system than the Diva Utopia.

Bigger and more powerful

The main difference between the Diva Utopia and the all-new Diva Mezza Utopia is size and power. That said, both are gargantuan.

While the Diva Utopia loudspeakers stand roughly four feet tall and weigh 141 pounds (each), the Diva Mezza Utopia are even bigger. The loudspeakers stand about three inches taller and weigh 192 pounds (each).

As for power, each Diva Mezza Utopia loudspeaker has a maximum power output of 500 watts, meaning the system peaks at 1,000 watts. On the flip side, last year’s Diva Utopia loudspeakers each maxed out at 400 watts, with the system able to deliver 800 watts of combined power.

Naim Class A/B amplification

Like its smaller sibling, the Diva Mezza Utopia is a joint effort between Focal and Naim, its sister company. Focal handles the loudspeaker tech, while Naim handles the amplification and streaming.

And just like the Diva Utopia, each Diva Mezza Utopia loudspeaker has a 3-way design consisting of a beryllium tweeter, a mid-range driver, and four side-mounted woofers. (Note: the Diva Mezza Utopia’s 8-inch woofers are larger and promise to help it deliver deeper bass.)

Each loudspeaker is powered by three Naim Class A/B amplifiers, which feed 90 watts to the tweeter, 30 watts to mid-range drivers, and 280 watts to the four woofers.

Plug-and-play ready

Aside from the size, power and price tag, the Diva Mezza Utopia works precisely the same as the Diva Utopia. It’s designed for audiophiles (with deep pockets) who want a versatile plug-and-play-ready system without the hassle of dealing with separate components.

The active loudspeaker system can easily be integrated into your current hi-fi or home theater system thanks to its HDMI eARC, Toslink, RCA and USB inputs. It supports Wi-Fi (AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect) and Bluetooth streaming, too.

For the best possible audio quality, the two loudspeakers need a direct wired connection — this unlocks “studio-grade resolution” up to 24-bit/192kHz.

However, for those who want more flexibility to place the speakers around the room, they do support UWB (ultra-wideband) technology, which allows them to transmit audio between them at up to 24-bit/96kHz.

The active speaker system is priced at a cool $69,000.

Price and availability

Visually, each Diva Mezza Utopia loudspeaker shares a similar sculptural design with its smaller sibling — both feature a dual-tweeter grille, a Yin & Yang symbol, a bi-tone ring, and a felt exterior. However, the new models are available in a luxurious ivory finish.

As for price, Focal’s Diva Mezza Utopia are considerably more expensive than the Diva Utopia. A pair costs $69,000.

They are available for order now.
