Focal is a luxury French hi-fi company known for making some of the best (and most expensive) loudspeakers on planet Earth. For example, a pair of its Grande Utopia loudspeakers can run almost $300,000. ย

Focal makes a wide variety of high-fidelity headphones designed for audiophiles and music professionals, too. But in recent years, itโ€™s also dabbled more into consumer space.

In 2022, it released the Bathys (pronounced โ€œbat-eesโ€), its first and only pair of wireless noise-cancelling headphones. They are priced at $699, making them still some of the most expensive ANC wireless headphones on the market.

And while the company hasnโ€™t released a second-generation model of these nearly 3-year-old headphones, it has given them a new look.

Murdered-out cans

When Focal originally released the Bathys in 2022, it only offered them in one silver-and-black finish โ€” which you can see in my review of the Bathys, here. Then, in 2023, it introduced a second finish called โ€œDune,โ€ which is kind of off-white.

Now, Focal has released the Bathys in a third finish that it is calling โ€œDeep Black.โ€ As you probably guessed, these latest headphones are all black everywhere. The company says the black shade is โ€œsynonymous with elegance and timelessness.โ€

Premium design and sound

Besides the new Deep Black finish, the Bathys are exactly the same as before. They have a standout design and are made out of premium materials, such as magnesium, aluminum and genuine leather.

As for sound, the Bathys share the same 40mm M-shaped dome drivers as Focalโ€™s non-wireless closed-backย Celestee ($999)ย headphones. They sound great wirelessly, but they can also play lossless-quality audio (up to 24-bit/192kHz) when used as wired headphones, too.ย

Same price as before

The Focal Bathys in Deep Black cost $699, the same price the Focal sells its Bathys headphones in black/silver or Dune. So you donโ€™t have to worry about paying extra for murdered-out cans.

That said, the Bathys are still way more expensive than wireless noise-canceling headphones by the likes of Bose, Sony and Apple. And theyโ€™re not going to sound that much better, nor are they going to have superior ANC than those more popular flagships cans.

Basically, youโ€™re buying the Bathys because you donโ€™t want the same ANC headphones as everybody else โ€ฆ and you can afford to do so.

The Focal Bathys in Deep Black are available now from various authorized sellers, including Amazon.
