These Desktop Speakers Are Primed for Budget-Conscious Audiophiles

The affordable hi-fi maker just announced its best-ever desktop speaker system.

FiiO is a rising force in the budget-friendly hi-fi space. And while it’s best known for its portable audio players, DACs and desktop amplifiers, the company makes several desktop speakers, too.

And now, the audio manufacturer has announced its most powerful and high-end desktop speaker system to date.

Engineered from the ground up

The FiiO SP5 is a compact active speaker system that’s primed for desktop use. The brand claims that it has been engineered from the ground up with a dual power supply system — so each speaker is individually powered.

According to FiiO, this “ensures consistent power delivery, minimized cross-channel interference, and a level of sonic stability typically reserved for component systems.”

A powerful, compact speaker system

The speaker system has an independent 4-channel amplifier design that delivers 80 watts of power per speaker — 60 watts go to the 5.25-inch Rohacell woofer and 20 watts go to the 1-inch silk dome tweeter.

FiiO says that the Rohacell woofer, which is made with the same material as in many high-end speakers, ensures ultra-low distortion and tight, responsive lows. And the rear cavity-enhanced tweeter is able to deliver “smooth highs without losing any information.”

On the back the system, you can find various inputs for analog and digital sources. Plus, there’s a 3-band bass and treble adjustment system.

Audiophile adjustments

FiiO has integrated the SP5 with a few unique features catered towards audiophiles and music engineers.

On the back of each speaker, there’s a 3-band EQ switch that allows you to adjust its treble, bass, and low bass based on the speaker’s location; for example, this allows you to dial down the bass of the speaker if it’s located too close to a wall.

For further tweaking, you can access 10-band EQ via the company’s companion app (iOS and Android compatible).

Modern versatility

The SP5 has a variety of inputs (AUX, RCA, XLR, and ​USB-C) and can accept analog and digital sources. This allows you to plug the speakers directly into your computer or larger hi-fi system.

Additionally, each of these inputs is supported by independent volume memory. This means you can customize the sound settings for each input, and the system will remember them, automatically switching to those settings when that input is being used.

And finally, the FiiO SP5 has built-in Bluetooth and can stream high-resolution audio thanks to support for LDAC and aptX Adaptive codecs.

Price and availability

The FiiO SP5 active speaker system will cost $749 and be available to order this September.
