Cambridge Audio — the British audio manufacturer best known for its beautiful, high-end and new-age streamers, amplifiers and turntables — has announced a compact power amplifier for traditional hi-fi setups.

Half-width hi-fi

The MXW70 is the newest addition to Cambridge Audio’s MX series of half-width hi-fi components. Its compact size, measuring  just 215mm wide, makes it easy to fit in tight spaces, be it on a desk or inside a media console.

While the MXW70 can be easily integrated into any hi-fi setup, it’s the ideal partner for the brand’s MXN10 music streamer. The two components have the same footprint, all-metal design and “Lunar Grey” finish.

Tiny amp, full-size power

The MXW70 is a no-frills power amplifier featuring Class D amplification, capable of delivering 70 Watts (at 8 Ohms) per channel. According to the brand, it’s capable of driving “even demanding speakers without the bulk of traditional power amplifiers.”

Additionally, the amplifier can be used in a mono mode — there’s a simple switch on its back — that unlocks 250 watts of bridgeable power. It’s an impressive little beast.

Complete the stack

The MXW70 is also the same half-width size as Cambridge Audio’s DacMagic 200M, which is a DAC, preamp and headphone amplifier with Bluetooth streaming capabilities.

Along with the MXN10 (and a high-quality set of loudspeakers), the three components promise to create quite a potent and versatile compact hi-fi system.

Price and availability

The Cambridge Audio MXW70 power amplifier is priced at $599 and comes in one “Lunar Grey” finish.

It’ll be available to order this July. You’ll be able to buy it directly from Cambridge Audio or from authorized retailers.
