KEF LS50 Meta
The KEF LS50 Meta are one of the best bookshelf speakers you can buy. They’re essentially passive versions of the company’s lauded LS50 Wireless II — they’re identical and feature the same Uni-Q driver array, which places a 1-inch tweeter inside a 5.25-inch woofer. They are available in three color options.
The Alpha P5 push well above their $500 price tag. They deliver an impressive level of transparency, detail and dynamic punch that works with almost every recording you try. Also, the build quality is solid for the price. You can drive these with 35-50 watts and wipe the floor with any wireless loudspeaker for many years to come.
Wharfedale, one of the oldest loudspeaker manufacturers in the world, is great at designing affordable loudspeakers that deliver a full-range sound — and its EVO4.2 bookshelf speakers are the prime example. They are fairly easy to drive and can play very loud without losing any sense of control or focus.
The B&W 606 S3 are definitely high-end, but they’re also some of the best-sounding and most dynamic bookshelf speakers you’ll likely find. If you’re a true music lover and you have a bigger room to set up your system (these get loud), the B&W 606 S3 are fantastic compact speakers.
The Audioengine A2+ Wireless have been one of our favorite powered speaker systems for years — and they make superb computer speakers. The can connect to your computer via AUX, but they also have RCA connections for a more traditional hi-fi system. They also support streaming via Bluetooth aptX, making them incredibly versatile little speakers.
Klipsch’s The Sevens is a versatile powered speaker system that can be connected to your computer (via 3.5mm or USB), TV (via HDMI ARC), or turntable (thanks to its built-in phono stage). They also have built-in Bluetooth — but not Wi-Fi — for easy streaming. Each speaker has a wooden cabinet and fabric grilles, helping it exude a real vintage look and feel.
The KEF LSX II LT is a more affordable version of the fantastic LSX II active speaker system. The LTs have most of the same wireless and wired capabilities. The big difference is that the power supply is built into the primary LT speaker and thus the two speakers need to be tethered to each other at all times. That’s a welcome tradeoff considering these new speakers are $400 cheaper.
The Audioengine A5+ Wireless are bigger, better versions of the company’s A2+ Wireless (above) speaker system. They support numerous connections, so you can hook them up to a turntable, receiver or desktop (they make super nice computer speakers). They have built-in Bluetooth and a 24-bit DAC (which their smaller siblings lack), so you can stream higher-resolution audio.
