The first-generation Sonos Move was really the wireless speaker that kickstarted the movement. It was a portable speaker that had both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi streaming capabilities, making it an incredibly versatile speaker.

It worked as a traditional portable Bluetooth speaker that you could take to the park or the beach. And it worked as a Wi-Fi speaker at home, allowing it to play higher-resolution audio, function as a smart speaker, and be easily grouped with other Sonos speakers in your home for a superior multi-room experience.

And unlike a traditional powered smart speaker — which the market is now saturated with these days — these portable speakers weren’t confined to one room. You could bring it from room to room, where you were in the house. In that way, it did the job of multiple speakers. (You just had to remember to charge it.)

Fast forward a few years to present day, and several audio companies have entered the fray, releasing portable speakers with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming of their own. Also, Sonos is now on its “Gen 2” models of its Move and smaller Roam speakers.

Of course, these advanced portable speakers aren’t for everybody. They’re typically more expensive than similar-sized portable Bluetooth speakers or powered Wi-Fi speakers. Plus, for less tech-savvy individuals, they can be a little complicated to setup and use.

Still, for those looking for a portable wireless speaker that supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming — these are the best of the new breed.

Battery Life Up to 10 hours
Weight 5.1 pounds
Water-Resistance IPX4
Charging USB-C or charging base

Release date: November 2022

The Devialet Mania is probably the most striking of these new portable speakers. It has a similar dual opposing woofer design as the French audio company’s Phantom speakers, so listening to the speaker is a visual and visceral experience — and it sounds great. The only real downside of the speaker, other than price, is that it’s not really a rugged speaker: it’s designed to stay in and around your home.

The Bang & Olufsen Beosound A5 is a high-end portable speaker that supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming and delivers 360-degree sound. Additionally, the speaker’s top doubles as a wireless charging pad for your smartphone.

Bose Portable Smart Speaker

Specs

Battery Life Up to 12 hours
Weight 2.34 pounds
Water-Resistance IPX4
Charging USB-C or charging base

Release date: September 2019

The Bose Portable Smart Speaker is the company’s original rival to the Sonos Move. It’s similar in size and streaming capabilities — supporting both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — with the biggest difference being that it has a built-in handle for easy carrying and is compatible with Bose’s ecosystem of multi-room speakers instead of Sonos’s. The big downside is that Bose has yet to release a second-gen model and, in 2024, it feels quite dated.

Sonos Roam 2

Specs

Battery Life Up to 10 hours
Weight 0.95 pounds
Water-Resistance IP67
Charging USB-C or dock

Release date: June 2024

The Roam 2 is identical to Sonos’s 2021-released Roam in pretty much every — it’s the same size and has the same Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming capabilities. The most significant difference is that the Roam 2 has a dedicated pairing button to make the setup process easier. Compared to the other speakers on this list, the Roam 2 is the smallest, most rugged, most portable and most affordable.
