Audioengine has been making some of the best and most popular desktop speaker systems for years — with its A2 line being the standout. First introduced in 2007, the Audioengine A2 was known for its compact size, big sound and relatively affordable price.

Since then, the Texas-based audio maker has released several updated versions, the most recent being the A2+ Wireless, which added Bluetooth streaming capabilities and was released in 2019.

Now, Audioengine has introduced a new and improved version of its popular desktop speaker system. And it promises to sound even better than before.

24-bit audio

The all-new Audioengine A2+ is the direct successor to the 2019-released A2+ Wireless. The company has seemingly dropped “Wireless” from the name, as all its powered speakers now have wireless streaming capabilities.

The big upgrade with the new A2+ has to do with its improved audio quality. The speakers are identical to their predecessors, but Audioengine has given them an improved built-in DAC and the ability to play 24-bit audio; its predecessor maxed out at 16-bit audio.

When using the A2+’s new USB-C input (more on that below), the speakers can play audio up to 24-bit/96kHz. They also feature Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX HD support, allowing them to stream high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/48kHz audio.

According to the brand, transitioning from 16-bit to 24-bit audio is like “upgrading from standard definition to high definition in video.” And thus, you can expect the A2+ to deliver a more detailed and dynamic sound.

A more modern connection

Like its predecessor, the Audioengine A2+ is a super versatile powered speaker system. In addition to its wireless streaming capabilities, it also has digital and analog inputs; if you don’t want to use the speakers with your computer, you can hook them up to a turntable (with a built-in preamp) or CD player.

Like before, the A2+ has a traditional 3.5mm AUX jack on its back, but the new models have an additional USB-C input, as well. This not only gives you another (potentially easier) way to hook the speakers up to a computer, but it also supports higher-resolution audio (up to 24-bit/96kHz), too.
