Summer is movie season, and in a chaotic era of remakes, reboots, trilogies, and $14 movie tickets, it’s nice to have a guide. We’ve gathered a mix of big names, indies that aren’t disastrous (we saw a few while we were out at Sundance) and some sneaky under-the-radar flicks, all of which should be worth your while. Oh, and we threw the rest together in a sidebar for you to stream illegally after a long day at the pool.

Drama

BOYHOOD
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Ellar Coltrane
Director/Writer: Richard Linklater
Who did: Dazed and Confused (1993), Waking Life (2003) and Before Midnight (2013)
In theaters: July 11th
What happens: A boy grows from age 5 to age 18, and so does everyone around him.
How to Prepare: This was an epic undertaking. Linklater filmed the movie with the same cast for 12 years, rather than using multiple, semi-similar looking child actors of varying ages, as practicality should have dictated. This isn’t the first time Linklater has made time a major element in his films. Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight take place over one 24-hour period, with the later trilogy occurring with the same leads, each movie spaced nine years apart.
