If there was a burgeoning trend among notable watch releases in 2016, it was that “thin is in.” Yet while ultra-thin movements still aren’t particularly common, ultra-thin complications are even less so. And thin minute repeaters specifically? There’s just a handful from watchmaking powerhouses like Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Which is exactly why Bulgari’s latest minute repeater made a hell of a splash at Baselworld when it was announced as the thinnest minute repeater in the world.

The movement inside the watch is only 3.12mm thick and rests inside a thin, titanium version of the standard Octo’s multifaceted Gérald Genta case design; the dial’s numerals are cut out to provide a glimpse of the mechanical splendor within. Overall the watch comes in at a super slim 6.85mm thick — over a millimeter thinner than the previous record holder, the 8.09mm Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine. In an area of watchmaking where records are broken by fractions of a millimeter, that’s enormous.
