The roots of the HyperAdapt 1.0 can be traced all the way back to 1988, when Hollywood director Robert Zemeckis tapped two Nike designers for a brainstorming session on futuristic sneakers to include in the film. Now, the self-lacing props have an avatar in reality, with a shoe that improves athletic performance by providing the best fit for the task at hand. In the future, Nike hopes, the shoe will be able to sense when the wearer might need extra snugness and tighten at just the right time, or vice versa.
For now, a sensor automatically tightens the shoe when your heel steps in and small buttons on the side allow for adjustments — not a bad start as the future-is-now-the-present of footwear.
